We have a new program called BCOL -- Buckingham Charter Online Learning. It's split into two branches, one of which may be a great fit for your family. One branch is BCOL-H, with the H standing for Hybrid. This is essentially what used to be called BCAL -- students may take three courses on site (depending on availability) and the rest online. The other branch is BCOL-D, with the D standing for Distance. This is a completely online independent study program, but is run by Buckingham teachers who will be regularly communicating via Skype, FaceTime, or in person with the students and parents.

The goal is to provide a high-quality education with more flexibility for students and families that need it. The rigor and expectations are just as high, and the teacher support is just as readily available. Both programs use Edgenuity's online learning system, which utilizes video lectures, quizzes, assignments, papers, and tests to address a variety of learning styles. There will also be teacher-led additions, including Khan Academy practice, math support meetings, and science labs. Math support and science labs provide hands-on opportunities for students to put their learning into practice or get extra in-person help on difficult topics from highly-qualified teachers.

There are some huge perks of enrolling in one of these two programs. The first is that your child will be considered a Buckingham student, which means that he or she will be able to attend school events and try out for sports. Secondly, he or she will have the option to come onto campus part-time or full-time at the semester if there is room. Students enrolling in BCOL will sign a Master Agreement which commits them to the program semester by semester; after that they can continue with Distance, Hybrid, or on-site (again, if there's room).

There will be an informational meeting on Friday, May 27th at 3:00pm to get more information, have any questions answered, and enroll if interested. It will take place in Room 4 at the school; this is on the 188 (main office) side. Please let us know if you are able to come to the meeting by RSVPing here. This is a great new program that will open doors for even more students, which is a very exciting prospect. We hope to see you at the meeting!

Social Media class for parents: Wednesday, June 1st, 6:30 PM at Educational Services Center, 401 Nut Tree Rd. Vacaville in the Board room.

VUSD and the Vacaville Police Department are hosting a free class to help parents learn about current trends, aps, devices capabilities and dangers that face our kids.

RECENT  NEWS: A New York state man was arrested by federal authorities following an investigation by Vacaville police that included a then 12-year-old victim in Vacaville. Homeland Security agents arrested Robert J. Garneau, 21, of Warwick, New York on charges of online child exploitation.

As social media trends change day to day and technology advancements do the same, keeping up with devices and social media can be challenging for parents. Even parents who are up on social media might be surprised about what aps are now available and what kids can be exposed to.
