Air Quality Measures To Minimize Exposure for Students and Staff

VUSD will follow data and guidelines from the Spare the Air Current Conditions table and the Air Quality Index. The following are measures that VUSD staff will take to ensure minimal exposure to unhealthy air:

Air Quality Index

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Hazardous or Very Unhealthy ranges:

  • High and middle schools will shorten passing periods when possible in order to minimize student exposure to the air
  • After school sports will be cancelled
  • PE classes will be held indoors
  • Schools will hold "rainy day" schedules keeping students indoors for lunch and recess
  • Masks will be available in the school nursing office for students who feel they need one
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible
  • Absences for students with health conditions or concerns will be considered excused
  • Schools may be closed

Air Quality Unhealthy

If PM2.5 air quality levels enter Unhealthy range:

  • Outdoor school sports practices will be cancelled or held indoors. Some indoor sports may hold practice or games. Schools will communicate with athletes and parents about practice adjustments.
  • PE classes will be held indoors
  • Schools will minimize time outdoors for lunch and recess.
  • Indoor space will be provided for students who do not wish to go outside during break periods
  • Masks will be available in the school nursing office for students who feel they need one
  • Doors and windows will be kept closed as much as possible
  • Absences for students with health conditions or concerns will be considered excused

Air Quality Index- 150

  • PE classes may be held indoors. Physical activity will limited.
  • Space will be made available for students indoors during recess and lunch. Lunch and recess time may be limited.
